Local Activities
Warmed by the Gulf Stream, this area enjoys a mild climate all year round. There is much of historical interest here with links with St. Cuthbert and St. Ninian as well as Robert the Bruce and the Border Reivers. Robert Burns wrote much of his best works here and his home town of Dumfries now houses a wonderful new Visitor Centre.
The particular quality of light brought many well known artists to the region and nearby Kirkcudbright is a mecca for those interested in art and painting. Castle Douglas, Scotland's Food Town, is a short drive away while for those more interested in "feeding" the mind Scotland's official Book Town, Wigtown, is slightly further afield.
The Colvend Coast area
There is a tremendous range of activities here for the visitor. Golf courses, sailing, horseriding, cycling, walking and fishing are all available close by and there are tennis courts and swimming pools in nearby Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas and Dumfries.
Throughout the year there are various festivals including The Wickerman Festival in July, The Spring Fling Art Festival in May, the Kirkcudbright Jazz Festival in June, Gael Force(World Music) from late August to early November and enough concerts and ceilidhs to appeal to all interests.
