Property Description

The cottage dates from the C16th and is designed with a seamless blend of contemporary luxury and bespoke or antique furnishings. Equally at home in all seasons...the woodburning stove beckons in winter, enticing you to snuggle in front of one of the numerous films... in summer, the sheltered terrace is the perfect spot to spend all day gazing at the view with coffee or something cool in hand.

6 guests may be accommodated in 4 bedrooms (2 kingsize and 2 single) with 3 slate-lined bathrooms (1 en-suite shower room, 1 bathroom & 1 semi-wetroom shower).

All White Company linen, basket of logs, towels, robes, natural toiletries, Wifi, national landline calls & a deli grocery basket are included.

The baby grand piano has attracted composers, organists and all those practicing for exams!

The area is renowned for its superb local food and it would be perfectly possible to visit a different place for breakfast, lunch and dinner for a week!
Alternatively the kitchen is equipped with cooking and dining facilities for 12 people and we can also recommend personal chefs for special celebrations.

The character and comfort of the cottage make it sought after for wedding parties and honeymoon couples who stay for such venues as Larmer Tree Gardens and Wardour Castle.

For anyone interested in arriving by small aircraft..... Compton Abbas Airfield is within 10 minutes drive from the cottage.


Local Activities

The cottage stands on one of the most iconic and photographed locations in Britain, famous for its use in numerous films, not least Ridley Scott's Hovis advert featuring the Boy on a Bicycle. The massive walls of Alfred the Great's C9th Abbey still stand opposite Updown.

Shaftesbury is suitable for a car-free break as the National Express coach stop is only a minute's walk from the cottage; Gillingham train station is 4 miles away and well-served by taxis.

Independent shops, restaurants, pubs delis, & galleries are just a step away.

The cottage is in the perfect location for exploring the whole of the West Country and its numerous activites. In 15 - 30 minutes are golf, swimming, horse riding, walking, cycling, light aircraft flying, museums, castles, stately homes, shopping, cathedrals and the sights of Salisbury, Sherborne, Stonehenge, Wardour Castle & Longleat.
Within an hour are the Jurassic coast, Bath, Wells, Corfe Castle, Durdle Door, Poole and the Olympic sailing in Weymouth.
